Emmitt Joe Austin

Emmitt Joe Austin, 64, of Oklahoma City passed away on October 16, 1999. He was born on July 31, 1935 in Mount Herman, Oklahoma to Martha and Steven Austin.

After graduating from the Haskell Indian Institute in 1958, he worked construction in Kansas and Oklahoma until 1968. He then started working for the State of Oklahoma, where he retired after 25 years of service. Emmett was a member of the First Indian Baptist Church of Moore, Oklahoma, where he was an active member of Promise Keepers. He thoroughly enjoyed attending Sunday School and church services in order to be with his church family.

He was proud to be a part of the Marine Reserves from 1954 to 1961. He enjoyed bowling for a great many years. He also loved to watch sports, especially those that his kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews partcipated in. OU sports were also a favorite of his.

Emmitt is survived by his wife of 41 years, Arma Jean; four children, Debra and Patrick Birney, Steven and Tracy .Austin, Susan Austing, and Danielle Austin; grandchildren, Katie, Lauren, James, Chisney, Steven, Jr., Haley, and Johnny; four sisters and one brother, Loretha and Preston Bohanan, Faye and Leonard Reining, Shirley and George Hill, Wanda and Noel Sanders, and Paul and Donna Anna, and several nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Stephen and Chisney Gipson and Willis and Emma Austin.
